Janet Tait - Author

Edge-of-Your-Seat Fantasy and Science Fiction

Janet Tait writes fantasy and science fiction adventures with a touch of romance from sunny San Diego, California.

I offer editing services to writers at all levels, beginner to advanced, and all paths, self-published, hybrid, and traditionally published. I would love to help you look at both the big picture – plot, characterization, pacing, story, world-building – and the details - word choice, paragraph structure, figurative language, dialogue, narrative - to help you bring your book to the next level.

I focus on genre fiction, including science fiction and fantasy, romance, and mystery/thrillers, because that’s what I write and read. I’ve been active in these reader/author communities for many years, and understand the publishing environments, reader expectations, and literary conventions of these genres. I love sharing that in-depth knowledge with clients. I also have experience editing creative nonfiction and memoir.

I provide free consultations and offer competitive rates (determined after consultation and a thorough understanding of your project) for the following services:

Developmental editing: Do you need help with plotting, character development, pacing, world-building, building up the “sagging middle” of your book, or nailing that killer beginning or ending? Developmental editing - a focus on the “big picture” issues of your book - can help you solve these critical issues and more. My developmental editing service includes a full manuscript critique with a multi-page evaluation of the major issues to be fixed along with suggestions on how to fix them. I also offer a half-hour phone or Zoom consultation for any questions you may have after receiving the developmental edit.

Line Editing: Do you need help improving the impact of your writing and enhancing your unique voice and style? I offer line editing - going over your book line-by-line to strengthen word choice and paragraph structure for a manuscript that makes an impression on agents, editors, and readers alike. If you’ve been told that your concepts are great but your writing needs more polish, then a line edit may be the answer.

Coaching: Some writers find that talking out their writing problems with an experienced coach helps them solve difficult problems either in addition to, or instead of, traditional editing. I love to work with clients as a writing coach, providing advice and assistance on book projects and career issues on a recurring basis for either a half-hour or an hour at a time. We can meet over the phone or over Zoom, whichever works for you. I can help you with plotting problems, developing your characters, tackling tough world-building problems, discussing career issues, or any other writing-related topics of your choice. Rates are $75 per hour, $40 per half hour. Contact me through the form below to book your session.

Sensitivity Reading: I offer sensitivity reading in the following areas: PTSD, and C-PTSD, depression, anxiety, surviving natural disasters, sexual assault, childhood abuse, chronic illness (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue/ME), chronic migraines, disordered eating/fatness, and asexuality. I believe strongly in the value of thoughtful sensitivity reading and offer this service at a low rate to authors.

About Me: I’ve been an editor for several years, working with clients in romance, science fiction, thriller, fantasy, and other genres. I love to help authors bring out the best in their creative works. I offer my insights with kindness as well as precision because receiving feedback is never easy.

As a member of the Editorial Freelancer’s Association, I keep up to date in modern editorial practices and sharpen my skills through continuing education. I write fantasy and science fiction, often with a touch of romance. My first novel, Cast into Darkness, was an Amazon Top 50 Bestseller in Urban Fantasy. I am a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, the Romance Writers of America (PAN member), and Sisters in Crime.
